When I painted this, I imagined that it was a still from a dance sequence: the woman, catching light, as she comes out of the darkness. The whole body tense, from the arch of her chest to the tips of her toes, acting in opposition to her relaxed face, the tilted head, the soft fabric draping her body. So, to me, the two main elements being softness and strength, signifies a peaceful, conscious sort of freedom, an inner strength manifested outwards, even for a moment of the “choreography”.
