PROJECT STATEMENT:

this body of work explores themes of change, movement and loss, over a span of time, where time is deconstructed and made non-linear. these were borne out of feelings of longing, missing, mourning and acceptance. i think of them as almost diary entries, each capturing something from the melange of feelings I experienced. or somewhere there along the way. the pieces use a lot of objects as abstract symbols throughout, referencing my sentimentality and personal meaning attached to each, and in a broader lens, exploring objects and the kinds of connections and attachment we create with them. the pieces follow no narrative story, instead an emotive one of sorts and are largely abstract, reinforcing the ideas of attached meaning as each viewer takes something different.

i say these are like diary entries because it's me analyzing these thoughts, memories and feelings and trying to contextualize and sort of see them all in place, see them in a way.

Tyrone Mckie (b. 1997, St. Mary, Jamaica) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves fluidly among painting, collage, photography, sculpture, and video. Mckie’s work investigates identity, the shifting landscape of emotion, and the porous boundary between the self and the natural world. Each project unfolds as an act of self-discovery and a meditation on how personal history and environment converge. Their work has been presented in the group exhibitions RE/IMAGINE: Liberating Queer Futures and Liberation of Culture, and has appeared in publications including The Mango Seed Collective, The Headlight Review, and DO KRE IS, among others. Mckie is currently represented in New York by curator and creative director Mahelia de Randamie.
