Open-Wound Girl

Sculpture, Nikita Azevedo

“Cut me open and the light streams out.

Stitch me up and the light keeps streaming out between the stitches”

― Richard Siken, Crush

‘Open-Wound Girl' is an opening into the body of girlhood. The torso of a girl is lain on an altar – her body on the butcher’s block; an object of desire. She has gone beyond the limits of human suffering & emerged as transcendent – the patron saint of beauty & terror. Girlhood makes martyrs of us all.
